Dr. Kanani, Woodland Hills Dentist: Dangers of Tooth Damage and Obstructive Sleep Disorder

Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) May 19, 2013

Grinding your teeth at night can do much more damage than just losing sleep, or annoying your spouse. At the same time, according to an April 9, 2013 report by CNY Central (“Snoring and Teeth Grinding Could Be a Sign of Sleep Disorder”, a certain type of teeth grinding can be hard to prevent. Apparently, Obstructive Sleep Disorder (OSD) affects somewhere around 12 million Americans, and one of its symptoms is a habit of teeth grinding along with the snores. A cosmetic dentist in Woodland Hills, Dr. Kaveh Kanani, says that OSD's link to tooth damage can contribute to dental implant costs for patients.

Heart issues can be an early warning sign, and many studies say that obesity and sleep apnea are related. Excess fatigue can also show that the person isn't getting enough rest, which can lead to working longer hours because the brain isn't engaged, which can lead to more stress – which can lead to more teeth grinding. That vicious cycle, says the Woodland Hills dentist, can cause long-term damage to a patient's tooth. This is a good reason for dental patients to fill out those health forms, in which questions come up about sleep habits – it may save on dental implants cost.

Per CNY Central, some teeth grinding at night (or “sleep related bruxism”) can be discovered and treated by a ventilation mask, or continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP). However, some patients have claustrophobia or some other aversion to a face mask, which might make this treatment difficult. Instead, the article indicated that certain types of dental implants could alleviate the damage done by teeth grinding, as well as allowing patients to get a decent night's sleep.

Since teeth grinding and jaw clenching often happens during sleep, it's hard to know what's the reason for two other warning signs – migraines and sore jaws. If untreated, says Dr. Kanani, this habit can affect gum health and even lead to bone loss. This makes it more difficult, though not impossible, to install dental implants if teeth are actually lost. If enamel gets fractured, or there are significant wear marks, a dentist that does consistent cleanings will pick up on the warning signs.

Sedation procedures can be helpful for those who have anxiety in the dentists' chair, and Dr. Kanani offers a low-cost monthly special (less than $400) so that patients don't also have to experience the fear of the dentist's bill. Losing weight is also a good way to reduce dental implant cost, because many people with an excess of 50 pounds or more contract sleep apnea or even OSD.

Dr. Kaveh Kanani gained a biology degree from California State University, and his doctorate in Dental Surgery comes from New York University. The American Academy of Implant Dentistry, approved by the court system, gave him the award of an Associate Fellowship, and Dr. Kanani built on an existing knowledge base by taking multiple AAID Maxi courses – some of which require 10 months for completion. Dr. Kanani has had his own office since 2001, after becoming a Southern California Family Dentistry associate, and working with South Bay Dental.
