Dr. John O’Neil Simmonds | Joins Releford Medical Institute as Medical Director
Date:11/1/2013

Los Angeles, California (PRWEB) November 01, 2013

The Releford Medical Institute welcomes Dr. John O’Neil Simmonds as the practice’s Medical Director. Simmonds will oversee the Institute’s Sports Medicine division, as well as expand the practice’s commitment to the orthopedic and diabetic patients in the community. Like Dr. Bill Releford, the Institute’s founder, Simmonds believes in the healing properties of non-surgical therapies like Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP).

After receiving a stellar education and training at some of the nation’s most renowned medical institutions, Dr. Simmonds went into private practice. He provides the highest standards of medical care and manages common and complex orthopedic conditions through non-surgical methods whenever possible. This includes PRP injections, patient education, chiropractic, physical medicine, physical therapy, rehabilitative treatments, nutrition, and sports medicine education.

Says Dr. Releford, “Dr. Simmonds has the medical, oversight, and management skills needed to take our practice to the next level—to reach out specifically to athletes, to work in the sports management niche, and to maintain the quality of community care that the Releford Institute is known for. I am proud to welcome him to our team.”

Dr. Simmonds concurs, stating, “I’m trained as a surgeon. But like Dr. Releford, if I can avoid cutting, I will. Education and alternatives to surgery—like PRP—are options I firmly believe in because they can speed healing and reduce pain.”

About Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy
PRP therapy is an innovative, non-surgical approach that uses healing components derived from a small, concentrated amount of a patient’s own blood. Injected into damaged tissue, PRP therapy has the potential to “supercharge” the healing process. PRP has been successfully used in orthopedics and sports medicine to treat joint and tendon pain, ankle sprains, heel pain, non-healing wounds, plantar fasciitis, poor circulation, diabetic neuropathy, and many other conditions, as cited in the Journal of Orthopaedic Research (Jan. 2006). Recently, PRP therapy has made headlines due to its successful use by professional athletes like Tiger Woods, Kobe Bryant, Alex Rodriguez, and Rafael Nadal.

About Dr. John O’Neil Simmonds, M.D.
Dr. John O’Neil Simmonds, M.D. completed his undergraduate studies at Howard University in Washington D.C., where he graduated with honors in Biology and Chemistry under the institution’s B.S./M.D. Accelerated Medical Education Program. He then received his medical degree from Howard University College of Medicine, where he graduated in the top of his class with honors. Dr. Simmonds completed a general surgery internship at The Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, then continued his training in orthopaedic surgery there and later at the Martin Luther King Medical Center in Los Angeles.

Dr. Simmonds was in private practice for five years with an emphasis on the management of common and complex orthopaedic conditions through non-surgical methods. He wishes to provide the highest quality of medical care to the community, including all aspects of patient care with an emphasis on education, chiropractic, physical medicine, physical therapy, and rehabilitative treatments.

About Dr. Bill J. Releford, D.P.M.
Dr. Bill J. Releford, D.P.M., a graduate of the Temple School of Podiatric Medicine in Philadelphia, began his practice in 1990 and established the Diabetic Foot Institute, a facility dedicated exclusively to the reduction of diabetes-related amputations in high-risk populations. Dr. Releford is recognized both domestically and internationally as a leader in the field of diabetic limb preservation and wound care, and recently received prestigious awards from the Association of Black Cardiologists and the Regional Black Chamber of Commerce for his contributions to public health.

Dr. Releford is an assistant professor at Charles R. Drew University and lectures worldwide about the latest techniques in limb salvage and community-based outreach. He authored the book “Five Colors A Day to Better Health,” and has been featured on “NBC Nightly News” with Brian Williams, ABC’s “The View,” and in The Washington Post, Newsweek, and The Los Angeles Times.

His community outreach and health-care advocacy efforts are facilitated through the Diabetic Amputation Prevention Foundation (DAP), a non-profit organization he founded in 2001. Its mission is to educate at-risk populations to better understand diabetes and its complications through community-based programs.

Dr. Releford and the DAP Foundation have been recognized for the success of the Black Barbershop Health Outreach Program. Since its inception in December 2007, the program has screened over 25,000 men for diabetes and hypertension in more than 450 black-owned barbershops in over 26 cities.
