Dr. J G Moellendorf, DC, ND, LCP Attends Seminar on Resolving Common Hormonal Challenges in Men and Women

Sturgeon Bay, WI (PRWEB) December 18, 2012

Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin Chiropractor, Dr. J G Moellendorf, DC, ND, LCP joined with nearly two hundred healthcare professionals in Milwaukee interested in natural solutions to hormonal problems. Their purpose is to use cutting-edge research in order to improve patient outcomes, while reducing reliance on drugs and surgery and their side-effects. Sessions were led by Dr. Ronda Nelson, PhD, MH and Dr. Annette Schippel, DC.

The medical profession views hormonal problems as a puzzling phenomenon. For example, pre-menstrual symptom (PMS) affects up to 40% of women according to the American College of Obstetricians. Other authorities claim as many as 80% of women are affected. An accumulation of over 180 symptoms are included with PMS, including acne, bloating, constipation and diarrhea, cramping, digestive upsets, headaches, irritability, mood swings, swelling, along with cravings for sugar, chocolate, and salty foods. Treating these symptoms with various medications and their side-effects proves frustrating for both the patient and the doctor.

Endocrinologists acknowledge that hormonal problems all start in the brain with the hypothalamus and the pituitary gland. The hypothalamus connects the nervous system with the endocrine system through the pituitary. Information, both internal and external, is gathered, assessed, and interpreted by the hypothalamus to determine which hormones need to be released into the blood stream. This information is sent to the pituitary, which then “signals” the adrenals, thyroid, ovaries, testes, and liver as needed. Unfortunately, these glands may not be able to respond to this signal due to damage, toxic overload, or down-regulation from over-stimulation.

Natural health practitioners have found that one of the most common causes of hormonal dysregulation is toxic overload in the liver. The liver is responsible for detoxifying and eliminating the thousands of toxins that the body is exposed to daily. There are the pesticides and herbicides from growing food, preservatives to keep the food from spoiling, hormones and antibiotics to make food animals grow faster, heavy metals and other pollutants in the water, and air pollution. When the liver becomes overloaded with processing all these chemicals, it cannot effectively carry on all the other processes it is responsible for. There are many natural substances such as milk thistle, burdock root, dandelion root, beets, onions, garlic, radishes, broccoli, and many others which can detoxify the liver.

The second most common cause of hormonal imbalances is related to adrenal function. The stresses of daily living take their toll on the adrenals. Man’s ancestors may have had multiple “life and death situations” that activated their adrenaline and cortisol, but when it was over, they could relax. Today’s hectic pace of life with tight schedules and “always being on the run to keep up” cause a continual release of adrenaline and cortisol that never allows people the time to relax and recuperate. Eventually, the adrenals just cannot continue to keep up with this frenzied tempo. The reduction of stressors along with supplementation of the B vitamins, alpha-lipoic acid, licorice root, rehmannia, ashwaganda, echinacea, siberian ginseng, and many other natural substances can be used to support the adrenals.

The standard treatment of menopausal symptoms has been the use of synthetic progestins. Researchers have found that this has been causing uterine, ovarian, and breast cancers along with being implicated in cardiovascular problems. Many practitioners have been turning to bio-identical hormone creams to supplement declining hormone levels. Patients rave about how much younger and alive they feel—for about 2 years. Then their symptoms rebound with a vengeance because of the down-regulation of the cellular hormone receptors due to the high level of hormones being used. Frustration grows as they are forced to take continually increasing amounts of the creams to achieve ever decreasing results. Many respond favorably for long periods of time after doing a liver cleanse and then supplementing with chaste berry, omega-3 fatty acids, and a pituitary supplement.

The recent research has proven that there are many natural, drug-free solutions to the hormonal problems plaguing many patients.
