Dr. Anthony Sandler Named to the Diane and Norman Bernstein Professorship in Pediatric Surgery at Children's National Medical Center

o Dr. Peter Holbrook, chief medical officer at Children’s National, “The Diane and Norman Bernstein Professorship for Surgical Care will help us save the lives of some of our sickest children by providing funding for surgical research, a relatively new specialty with tremendous potential.”

Sandler was born and educated in South Africa. He was recruited to Children’s National from the University of Iowa, where he held the Robert and Helene Soper Chair in Surgery and was professor and chief of the division of pediatric surgery. After his residency, he completed a pediatric surgery fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, where he received the Outstanding Teaching of Surgical Residents Award as well as the prestigious Joel Roslyn Investigator Award from the Association for Academic Surgeons.

An active researcher, Sandler has published more than 70 peer-reviewed manuscripts in clinical and scientific medical journals. He is internationally known for his expertise in excising solid tumors and operative repair of congenital anomalies of the gastro-intestinal tract. His research interests focus on developing vaccines to minimize and prevent solid tumors in children. Sandler served as the chair of the publications committee for the American Association of Pediatric Surgery, and is a member of several committees of the Children’s Oncology Group.

Sandler is married to Dr. Nancy Bauman, a pediatric otolaryngologist at Children’s National, and they have three children.
