Dr. Andrew Kornstein’s Aesthetic Surgery Practice Sees an Increase in Consultations for Elective Mastectomies and Breast Reconstruction Surgeries

New York City plastic surgeon, Dr. Andrew Kornstein is a board certified plastic surgeon practicing cosmetic and reconstructive surgery in Manhattan for over 20 years. Whether a woman finds herself at high risk, or has actually been diagnosed with cancer, this procedure has influenced some fortunate women who are made aware of the facts to regain their health and retain their appearance. Kornstein seizes every opportunity to alert the public because of the prevalence of misinformation. “Many women are under the mistaken impression that a mastectomy is a major surgery with an extended recovery that spells the end to one’s self-esteem and femininity. This is no longer the case,” says Dr. Kornstein.

Former patient, Isabel Stoltzman is testimony to that fact. Having been diagnosed with a small cancer, stage 1 seven years ago, Stoltzman opted for a lumpectomy followed by radiation. “It never would occur to me to consider a mastectomy. The maiming, mounds, flaps and tattoos? Never,” says Isabel. After a 5 year anniversary another lump in the radiated breast was discovered, another Stage 1 cancer. “I was beyond shocked. After doing some research I determined Dr. Kornstein offered the best option. I discussed it with my oncologist in Texas and flew to New York where I had an in house mastectomy. All that was removed was my tissue. I slept there overnight without any prescription drugs necessary. There was no pain. The best part? I look better now than I did prior to the surgery. The better part? No more mammograms, no more worries,” says Isabel.    

According to Dr. Kornstein, single stage skin and nipple sparing mastectomy removes only the inner breast tissue, leaving the shell of the breast intact. “I have done many of these with my team which includes a renowned breast cancer surgeon from a highly respected hospital in the area. In the simplest of terms, he removes the tissue at risk and I recreate the breast. The beauty of this procedure is it removes the targeted tissue while presenting the opportunity to enhance the breasts. Most women are happier with their appearance than they were prior to surgery with the added benefit of never having to look over their shoulder again,” says Dr. Kornstein.

Kornstein performs this procedure in house, in his accredited OR. This is a bonus when compared with hospitals where high infection rates are by no means a safer, friendlier or more convenient place to have reconstruction (AAAASF statistics.) The patient stays overnight in his recovery room and often needs no more than Tylenol post operatively. Dr. Kornstein has performed this procedure for over 10 years and statistics prove there is no elevated future risk of cancer in keeping the skin and nipples intact.

Dr. Kornstein says, “In the last few years I see more women quietly putting their fears to rest through a single stage nipple sparing mastectomy. Women at high risk would do themselves a favor in researching this procedure.” Dr. Kornstein particularly recommends single stage bilateral mastectomy to those facing a lumpectomy with radiation, since the former essentially eliminates the chance for recurrence and leaves no tell-tale signs behind while a lumpectomy can be disfiguring and radiation has its own consequences. “In any case, your oncologist will be able to determine if you are a good candidate for skin and nipple sparing surgery. If you are, find the right cosmetic surgeon whose philosophy is that great aesthetics are not reserved solely for cosmetic patients but reconstructive patients as well.”
