Mission Research, the creator of GiftWorks fundraising software, was recently acquired by FrontStream Payments, a private-equity backed company that has also acquired JustGiving and ArtezInteractive. Under this new ownership, fees are rising and previous versions of GiftWorks will be disabled, leaving many users stranded without access to their database software unless they upgrade and pay higher fees.
DonorPerfect feels that the actions taken by the new owners are unfair and hurt the nonprofit community, particularly smaller nonprofits. Therefore, SofterWare is committed to providing GiftWorks users a better alternative to just paying more for a slightly updated version of GiftWorks and continuing to have uncertainty about future prices and products.
Doug Schoenberg, CEO for SofterWare, noted recently, "I had always respected GiftWorks as a competitor, because like SofterWare, they seemed committed to providing smaller nonprofits with affordable fundraising software. In fact, when Giftworks’ founders raised money, they made a very big deal about their investors’ commitment to social responsibility and why that would be advantageous to clients. Unfortunately, that commitment to social responsibility, and to keeping GiftWorks' clients happy, doesn’t seem to be shared by the new owners and their private equity investors." Jon Biedermann, Vice President for SofterWare, said, "We have a simple response to all users of GiftWorks 2014 and older versions: We will match the GiftWorks 2014 upgrade offer and provide them a true web-based product, with features and functionality that greatly exceed GiftWorks 20
