Distracted Driving Focus Shifts to Drunk Texting Following Recent Massachusetts Collision with Injuries – Kiley Law Group, LLC
Date:6/12/2013

Newport Beach, California (PRWEB) June 12, 2013

According to NBC 10 (June 4, 2013), Massachusetts police have recently arrested a young woman following a serious-injury auto collision. The collision occurred while one driver was on the wrong side of the road and whose phone revealed text messages to friends that said she was drunk shortly before the time of collision.

Distracted driving and the effects that distractions have on those operating motor vehicles have been given more attention in recent years. According to Distraction.gov, a government sponsored website devoted to increasing awareness, more than 10% of drivers under 20 years of age that are involved in fatal vehicle collisions were reported to be distracted at the time of their crash. Teenagers and young adults have been identified as being especially vulnerable to distractions while operating motor vehicles.

Tom Kiley Jr., Massachusetts car accident lawyer, has worked with several victims of distracted drivers and has noticed the disturbing increase in distraction taking place on the roadways. “You can see it when you drive, bike, or stroll near any roadway: drivers are more distracted now than ever before. We have seen this for years when advertising techniques bombard motorists with constant distractions designed to take their eyes off the road and place them on a well-designed ad campaign, but texting while driving has proven to have the potential to be substantially more dangerous.

“Car and Driver magazine created texting while driving simulations that found drivers traveling more than 20 additional feet when trying to stop their vehicle while texting than when keeping their eyes on the road. When traveling by car, 20 feet can be the difference between safely evading a car accident and tragically losing a loved one. The public is becoming more aware of the dangers associated with texting and driving, but we do not believe it has been accepted by those who are the most at risk: teens and young adults. As campaigns begin to gain traction warning young people about the life-threatening capabilities of driving while texted, we can only hope that they will be more successful at preventing tragic losses of life such as this,” said Attorney Kiley.
