Dikembe Mutombo Foundation to Partner with Fulbright Academy on 2016 Global Health Summit in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo

The Board of Directors of the Fulbright Academy announced today it will partner with the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation (DMF) on its 2016 Global Health Summit in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The organizations will work together to contribute to malaria prevention efforts in the Congo. The DRC has one of the highest mortality rates for children under the age of five; many of those deaths are attributed to malaria.

At the upcoming Fulbright Academy Global Health Summit in Montego Bay, Jamaica, Mr. Mutombo will be the keynote speaker on the final day of the conference (May 24-26). His keynote address will be on the topic: Global Health Challenges in the DRC – A Unique Perspective with Concrete Solutions.

Mr. Mutombo, Chairman and President of the Dikembe Mutombo Foundation, has donated over $23M of his own funds as part of the establishment of the $29M Biamba Marie Mutombo hospital. Chairman Mutombo is internationally recognized for his efforts to improve health, education and the quality of life for the people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC). A significant portion of the Foundation’s efforts are focused on healthcare, including building one of the newest general hospitals in the capital city of Kinshasa, DRC. The Biamba Marie Mutombo hospital opened its doors in December 2007 and provides much-needed health-care in an area still lacking. Born in Kinshasa, Mutombo arrived in the USA in 1987 on an academic scholarship and graduated from Georgetown University with dual degrees in Linguistics and Diplomacy. He was recruited to play basketball and played professionally for 18 years before retiring from the Houston Rockets in 2009.

Mutombo noted: “We are very excited to be partnering with the Fulbright Academy in this effort to focus attention on Global Health issues specific to the DRC. I believe together we can accomplish even more in this area than each of our organizations could on its own.”

The Biamba Marie Mutombo hospital was dedicated to the memory of Dikembe Mutombo’s mother. The hospital currently has nearly 170 beds with an ultimate future capacity of 300 beds. It is the most modern facility in the country, with state of the art equipment including a newly donated CT scanner (the first in the DRC.) This general hospital has the following traditional services: primary care, internal medicine, pediatrics, surgery, OB-GYN, surgical subspecialties such as neurosurgery, orthopedics, urology and ENT. The goal for the hospital is to provide quality care and to train a cadre of health professionals who, in turn, will continue to build capacity in the health institutions of the country. Other key initiatives include HIV testing and treatment, prevention of childhood communicable diseases such as TB and malaria.

Mutombo was awarded USA Weekend Magazine's "Most Caring Athlete Award," as well as the most generous athlete in the world by FOXSports.com. In February 2013, he was named the Humanitarian of the Year by the National Basketball Retired Player Association.

One Academy board member who is also the Executive Committee member dedicated to the Global Health Summit, Mr. Kim David Eger, noted that, “The Academy plans to partner with the DMF to involve a Fulbright focus on specific ways to prevent malaria in the DRC. Our motto is Create Collaboration & Catalyze Progress.”

Dr. Philip Rakita, Chairman of the Fulbright Academy, shared a broader perspective on the conference itself. “The Fulbright Academy Summit on Global Health will bring together a set of multi-disciplinary specialists and advisers who are changing the face of health and health care in communities around the world. Participants, who will include renowned health professionals from across the globe, will discuss the drivers of human health and health care, such as public policy, technology, environmental, nutrition, and sexual health,” he said.

The Summit is open to the public. Participation is not limited to current grantees or to alumni of the Fulbright Exchange Program. Anyone interested in the conference themes or who wishes to network with global Fulbrighters is welcome to register and participate.

The Fulbright Academy is an independent organization established by the global community of Fulbright scholars. The Academy creates opportunities for collaboration among alumni and their institutions, and its programs are a catalyst for progress in many fields.
