Diet Guide Published on Dec. 3 by Clear Passage Physical Therapy Provides Life-Saving Information
Date:12/21/2012

Gainesville, FL (PRWEB) December 21, 2012

For people with digestive disorders or bowel obstruction, eating the wrong foods can create major problems, or even be life-threatening. To help clarify diet choices, Clear Passage Physical Therapy® has developed a 42-page, illustrated Digestive Health Guide, available for online download at no cost.

After an average hospital stay of nearly two weeks followed by an invasive surgery, roughly 7 percent of people with a primary diagnosis of small bowel obstruction die before discharge from the hospital (Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project, 2009). In less severe cases, obstruction may cause severe pain, abdominal cramping or fullness and gas. Consuming certain foods can exacerbate these symptoms, decreasing patients’ quality of life.

“Patient education is a critical part of our mission; we want to empower people to live the life they want,” said physical therapist Belinda Wurn, National Director of Services at Clear Passage. “Many people with these disorders feel that they are trapped in a hopeless situation, having been told by their doctors that recurring bowel obstructions and surgeries were inevitable. We hope the Guide will help these people take control of their condition and life.”

The Digestive Health Guide provides a comprehensive summary of health and nutrition guidelines for people with digestive disorders. It describes the three progressive dietary tracks Clear Passage recommends for those with digestive problems such as recurring bowel obstruction and Chrons Disease. Patients can start with a track appropriate for their current condition, then learn move up or down to another track, depending on their symptoms. They learn about foods they should eat or avoid on each of these diet tracks, along with sample recipes and menus. The Guide also explains how to ‘test’ which foods they can and cannot tolerate, and how to safely transition from one diet to another.
