Diabetes Awareness Month This November Alerts People to Its Link to Gum Disease Through Dr. Roman Shlafer

Throughout November, in honor of Diabetes Awareness Month, Dr. Roman Shlafer is educating people on the connection between diabetes and gum disease. People with diabetes have a greater risk of contracting the condition, which can cause widespread health issues. However, people who visit Dr. Shlafer can receive minimally invasive laser gum surgery to remove periodontal disease and prevent the health issues that come with it.

The American Diabetes Association reports that the prevalence of periodontal disease is greater among people with diabetes. This is because diabetics are generally less capable of resisting infections. People who have diabetes and do not control their blood sugar levels well are especially at risk of developing periodontal disease. Dr. Shlafer recommends that people with diabetes develop consistent oral hygiene habits and minimize activities like smoking that increase the risk of periodontal disease. Unfortunately, research indicates that the development of gum disease may also have a negative effect on diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association. In general, infections can cause increases in blood sugar levels. Periodontal disease is a persistent infection that can make blood sugar levels more difficult to manage.

Dr. Shlafer is raising awareness this month out of concern for both the oral and general health of people with diabetes. It is important for anyone with periodontal disease to seek treatment as soon as possible.
