Diabetes Awareness Month This November Alerts People to Its Link to Gum Disease Through Dr. Roman Shlafer

Farmington, MI (PRWEB) November 24, 2013

Throughout November, in honor of Diabetes Awareness Month, Dr. Roman Shlafer is educating people on the connection between diabetes and gum disease. People with diabetes have a greater risk of contracting the condition, which can cause widespread health issues. However, people who visit Dr. Shlafer can receive minimally invasive laser gum surgery to remove periodontal disease and prevent the health issues that come with it.

The American Diabetes Association reports that the prevalence of periodontal disease is greater among people with diabetes. This is because diabetics are generally less capable of resisting infections. People who have diabetes and do not control their blood sugar levels well are especially at risk of developing periodontal disease. Dr. Shlafer recommends that people with diabetes develop consistent oral hygiene habits and minimize activities like smoking that increase the risk of periodontal disease. Unfortunately, research indicates that the development of gum disease may also have a negative effect on diabetes, according to the American Diabetes Association. In general, infections can cause increases in blood sugar levels. Periodontal disease is a persistent infection that can make blood sugar levels more difficult to manage.

Dr. Shlafer is raising awareness this month out of concern for both the oral and general health of people with diabetes. It is important for anyone with periodontal disease to seek treatment as soon as possible. Dr. Shlafer offers his patients an advanced laser gum surgery technique that causes minimal damage to healthy tissue, the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP). During the procedure, he uses a special laser, the Periolase MVP-7, which removes periodontal disease but is not absorbed by the teeth or healthy gum tissue. Dr. Shlafer's patients typically experience little pain, a short recovery, and a successful removal of periodontal disease.

During Diabetes Awareness Month, Dr. Shlafer is encouraging people with diabetes to pay attention to warning symptoms of gum disease. These include gum inflammation, sensitivity, and even bleeding. People who pay attention to these symptoms and schedule an appointment with Dr. Shlafer for laser gum surgery may be able to prevent serious health consequences. Anyone who needs more information on periodontal disease symptoms or treatments is encouraged to visit Dr. Shlafer's website or call his office.
