Detroit Physician Herbert C. Smitherman, Jr., M.D., Awarded $25,000 in J.H. Kanter Prize Competition
Date:8/11/2009

EAST LANSING, Mich., Aug. 11 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Michigan State Medical Society (MSMS) and the Wayne County Medical Society of Southeast Michigan (WCMS) congratulate their candidate in the J.H. Kanter Prize competition, Herbert C. Smitherman, Jr., M.D., who will receive a runner-up award of $25,000 for his work in improving access to care and addressing disparities among the underserved in Detroit.

"Doctor Smitherman has given his time, toil, sweat and tears to improve health care for Detroit's most vulnerable population," said MSMS president Richard E. Smith, M.D., an obstetrician/gynecologist at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit. "This city, this state and this country owe him a debt of gratitude for the work he has done and continues to do. Congress should look at how he has developed a system to improve access and quality while controlling costs."

"While the rest of the nation is debating health care reform, Doctor Smitherman has worked with a missionary zeal for more than two decades to overcome disparities in health care for the underserved," said WCMS president George H. Shade, Jr., M.D., an obstetrician/gynecologist at the Detroit Medical Center. "We are all proud of him and the work that he does. He is a selfless man who sacrifices for others."

MSMS is the professional association of more than 15,000 physicians in Michigan, and WCMS is the county society affiliate representing 5,200 physicians. The mission of MSMS is to promote a health care environment that supports physicians in caring for and enhancing the health of Michigan citizens through science, quality and ethics in the practice of medicine. Visit the MSMS Web site at www.msms.org for other health-related information.
