Historic Curriculum for Martial Arts Schools about Diabetes Awareness
FT. PIERCE, Fla., June 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Defeat Diabetes Foundation announced the launch of their next diabetes awareness program: Martial Arts Defeat Diabetes(R) Community Action Project (MADDCAP(TM)), a historic health curriculum designed for Martial Arts schools focusing on diabetes awareness and prevention. The program is the result of a unique collaboration between Defeat Diabetes Foundation Executive Director Andy Mandell -- Mr. Diabetes(R) and Martial Arts Master Teacher Tom Callos.
"Children are at great risk for developing diabetes and are also the most likely to benefit from diabetes prevention information. We developed this first of its kind program with martial arts schools in mind since they primarily serve children and young adults, but it could easily be used by other youth related organizations such as the Scouts or Y programs," said Mandell.
"This potentially life-saving curriculum includes information about the disease, the risk factors, warning signs, complications and ways to prevent the disease through nutrition and physical activity," he concluded.
"Martial Arts schools will also share this crucial information within their respective communities through local schools, youth groups and other civic organizations. The net result will be a visible and active resource for basic diabetes information, and the positive and healthy advantages of a martial arts education for both youngsters and adults," added Callos.
Diabetes is a chronic and preventable health condition that has reached epidemic proportions. 22 million Americans have diabetes and one third is undiagnosed. 54 million are "pre-diabetic" and are at risk for developing the disease.

They embrace a brand of self-defense that includes awareness for the way we treat our planet, ourselves, our family, neighbors and community, and the way we consume, think and behave.
