DePuy Pinnacle Hip Lawsuit News: Bernstein Liebhard LLP Notes Release of New Study Tying Elevated Metal Ions to Metal-on-Metal Hip Failure

New York, New York (PRWEB) July 12, 2014

As DePuy Pinnacle hip lawsuits ( continue to move forward in U.S. courts, Bernstein Liebhard LLP notes the publication of a new study that ties elevated metal ion levels to the failure of metal-on-metal hip replacements. The research, which appears in the July 2nd issue of The Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery, looked at 597 patients who had received unilateral Articular Surface Replacement prostheses at least twelve months earlier. The blood metal ion levels of patients who had experienced failure of their hip were compared to the non-failure patients included in the group. Those who had suffered hip replacement failure had significantly higher blood cobalt and chromium ion levels than patients with non-failed arthroplasty. *

“Our Firm is representing numerous plaintiffs in Depuy Pinnacle lawsuits who suffered premature failure of a metal-on-metal version of the device. Many of our clients also tested positive for excessive levels of chromium and cobalt in their blood,” says Bernstein Liebhard LLP, a nationwide law firm representing victims of dangerous drugs and medical devices. The Firm is currently offering free Pinnacle hip lawsuit reviews to individuals who may have been injured following implantation of the metal-on-metal version of the hip system.

Pinnacle Hip Lawsuits
Court documents indicate that more than 6,400 Pinnacle hip lawsuits involving a metal-on-metal version of the device that utilizes the Ultamet liner are currently pending in a federal multidistrict litigation underway in U.S. District Court, Northern District of Texas. All of the claims similarly allege that the all-metal design created by this configuration makes the hip implant prone to premature failure and other complications, including metallosis (metal ion poisoning) and chronic pain. Jeffrey S. Grand, a partner with Bernstein Liebhard LLP, is serving on the Plaintiffs’ Steering Committee for the federal proceeding. The litigation’s first bellwether trial is scheduled to get underway in September. (In re: DePuy Orthopaedics Inc. Pinnacle Hip Implant Product Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2244)

In May 2013, Johnson & Johnson and DePuy Orthopaedics announced that they would cease the sale of metal-on-metal hip implants, including the device involved in Pinnacle hip lawsuits. The companies’ action followed an alert issued by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in January 2013, which warned that metal-on-metal hips were more likely to fail early than those made of other materials. The agency also revealed that it was considering new rules that would subject the all-metal hips to greater regulatory oversight.**

Victims of premature hip failure and other complications allegedly caused by the metal-on-metal Pinnacle hip implant may be entitled to compensation.
