Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption Offers Free Foster Care Adoption Awareness Toolkits

DUBLIN, Ohio, Nov. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- National Adoption Day is November 15 as part of National Adoption Month. To help adoption agencies, civic and faith-based groups, corporations, educators and others generate awareness, a new 2008 Foster Care Adoption Awareness Toolkit can be ordered at http://www.davethomasfoundationforadoption.org.

It offers free suggestions and resources to promote foster care adoption awareness, including A Child is Waiting: A Step-by-Step Guide to Adoption. This year's toolkit also features a special post-adoption section sponsored by Jockey International's Jockey Being Family initiative.

Foundation research indicates a surprising number of Americans underestimate the number of children waiting for adoptive families, believe children in foster care entered because of delinquency and don't know foster care adoption is affordable and permanent. The toolkit arms advocates with information dispelling these myths.

The reality is more than 129,000 children in U.S. foster care are available for adoption; children who have entered the system through no fault of their own as victims of abuse, neglect or abandonment; children who can wait up to five years to be adopted, move three or more times and become separated from siblings.

"Our founder Dave Thomas said these children are not someone's responsibility. They are our responsibility," said Rita Soronen, executive director of the Dave Thomas Foundation for Adoption. "We are pleased to make these toolkits available as a free resource for those who share Dave's vision by working passionately on behalf of the victims of abuse and neglect waiting for adoptive families. Together, we can make a difference in the lives of children."
