PASADENA, Calif., March 25 /PRNewswire/ -- Danny Calegari has been appointed as the Richard Merkin Distinguished Professor of Mathematics at the California Institute of Technology. Dr. Richard Merkin, President of Heritage Provider Network and avid math enthusiast, chose the Mathematics Department as the recipient of his endowment because of his passion for the field.
"Healthcare research is very exciting, and increasingly dependant on mathematics. Math is the fabric with which the universe is made," says Dr. Merkin.
As CEO of one of the largest physician-owned multi-specialty medical groups in California, Dr. Merkin oversees the operation of 21 medical facilities comprised of 3,500 primary care physicians, 13,000 specialists and 36 hospitals. He still finds time to contribute to education in California, a task he views as a necessary investment for the future of our community. Along with being a member of the Caltech Board of Trustees, he also serves on the Board of the Alliance for College-Ready Public Schools, which consists of five schools in the greater Los Angeles area, including the Richard Merkin Middle School.
"One of our greatest resources is the education of young people before they reach high school age," says Dr. Merkin. "I chose to support the middle school so that we can excite children about education before negative high school patterns might intrude."
His support reaches deeper into the community, with contributions to organizations such as the After-School All-Stars program, which puts children in a safe and educational environment after school, and Sound Body Sound Mind, a comprehensive physical fitness program established to promote self-confidence and healthy lifestyle choices among high school students.
Dr. Merkin is very proud to have Calegari as the recipient of his
endowment. Calegari, who specializes in classical geometry and topology,
received his PhD in 2000 from UC Berkeley. He is world renowned
