Damariscotta Veterinary Clinic Offers Tips for Flea Prevention

Damariscotta, ME (PRWEB) June 24, 2013

Fleas tend to show up often during the hot, humid weather in the Northeast, but flea prevention should be used year round. There is no such thing as flea season, according to Damariscotta Veterinary Clinic, but they recommend taking action immediately to prevent a flea infestation.

Fleas can survive on a pet and inside anywhere year round. The hot and humid summer weather in the Northeast is the ideal environment for a flea population. A few fleas can turn into a massive infestation in a hurry. One female flea can lay up to 50 eggs a day, which in turn can hatch within two to five days then go through a larval stage of 7-14 days before moving on to a cocoon stage that can last anywhere from seven days to six months. These newly hatched fleas are looking for a proper host.

Wildlife and neighborhood pets constantly visit backyards and can spread fleas and flea eggs. It is also possible for people to bring fleas inside a house. Once a home is infested, it’s imperative to treat all the pets in the household and continue treating them year round to stop the cycle.

Damariscotta Veterinary Clinic says the best way to stop fleas is to buy flea products through a veterinarian and continue to use a preventative year round. Purchasing products through a veterinarian allows pet owners to get proper instruction for applying the product and answers to questions about safety and concerns about the product not working or the pet having an adverse reaction. Also, over-the-counter flea control products are less effective than prescription products and can even be toxic. Once they start using flea medication, pet owners are encouraged to keep using it year round. Stopping use of flea medicine can lead to re-infestation. Regular use of flea medication can also prevent flea allergy dermatitis that can develop if medication is used intermittently.

All pets in the household have to be treated to successfully prevent or get rid of a flea infestation. If other pets are not treated, the fleas on them will continue to lay eggs and infest the whole house.

Flea prevention is a well-worth expense. The use of monthly flea medication is a low-cost alternative to treating flea-related illnesses and household flea infestations. Find out how to treat fleas by contacting Damariscotta Veterinary Clinic at 207-563-3934 or visit
