Dallas Gastroenterologist Named Vice President of Prestigious National Organization

DALLAS, May 15 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- C. Richard Boland, M.D., chief of gastroenterology at Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas, has been named vice president of the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) Institute, a position that will evolve into the presidency in 2011. The oldest medical specialty society in the United States, the AGA is dedicated to advancing the science and practice of gastroenterology. AGA membership includes 16,500 physicians and scientists.

Dr. Boland is a nationally recognized physician with a long history of teaching, training post-doctoral fellows, serving the AGA, speaking throughout the country, publishing hundreds of papers and researching colon cancer.

Dr. Boland received his medical degree from Yale University School of Medicine in New Haven, Conn., and after completing his Internal Medicine training and two years in the Indian Health Service, completed his fellowship and was appointed Assistant Professor at the University of California, San Francisco. He then moved to the University of Michigan, where he rose to Professor of Internal Medicine.

After serving as the chief of the division of gastroenterology and associate director for clinical research at the University of California San Diego Cancer Center, Dr. Boland joined the medical staff at Baylor Dallas in 2003. Since coming to Dallas, Dr. Boland has focused entirely on colon cancer research with both laboratory-based and clinical programs designed to rapidly translate research results into diagnostic, preventive and treatment approaches. He has been funded by the National Institutes of Health for 30 years.

Dr. Boland has been a member of the AGA since 1978 and has served on numerous AGA committees and in numerous AGA leadership roles over the past 30 years.
