SANTA MONICA, Calif., Feb. 3 /PRNewswire/ -- The most common New Year resolutions revolve around being healthier, but are usually focused on physical appearance: lose weight, tone up, exercise more, and eat less junk food. A growing collection of research is finding an intimate relationship between body and mind. In order to become a healthier individual, people must focus on ways to maintain mental health and cognitive function as well as physical health.
Dakim BrainFitness shares some great (and very simple) resolutions which will provide the brain with the right kind of activities to fortify mental capacities.
1 -- Socialize More Often -- Apart from being very important to feeling engaged and integrated in society, socialization provides the opportunity for communication, critical thought, creativity, and emotional expression. Resolve to engage people in real conversations and exchanges of ideas more than you did in 2008.
2 -- Eat more "brain-healthy" foods -- What we eat directly affects the performance of our brain. Resolve to eat more fish (salmon, herring, sardines), unsalted nuts including walnuts, fruits and vegetables in 2009. Apart from the effect "junk food" has on the waist line, some studies suggest a high intake of fat, sugar, and cholesterol, could also increase the risk for the most common type of dementia.
3 -- Become more ambidextrous -- The left side of the brain controls the right hand and vice-versa. Using both hands to do various activities around the house is brain boosting exercise which induces the utilization of both sides of the brain. Start using that less dominant hand in simple daily activities; for example, resolve to eat breakfast with the less dominate hand.
4 -- Do something new -- Resolve to start a new hobby in 2009. Consider taking up dancing, gardening, knitting, or a musical instrument. Apart from requiring concentration to learn something new, the new activity may provide mental stimulation otherwise lacking in current daily activities. For example, gardening requires the use of visual-spatial reasoning to imagine and plan which plants will go where in relation to each other.
5 -- Get more cardio vascular exercise -- This may have been on that list of original resolutions to help with physical appearance; however, it can also improve brain function. Exercise will help the heart and thereby feed the brain with necessary blood and oxygen. So whether in the form of power-walking or taking the stairs instead of the elevator, make 2009 a little more active. Of course, talk to your doctor before beginning any exercise program.
6 -- Learn meditation -- Resolve in 2009 to find the time for meditation, prayer or other forms of spirituality. Studies have documented a relationship between spirituality and the immune system, to longevity and attendance at formalized places of worship, and to the general well being of those who may be ill.
