eration, Mr. Taylor’s widow told the New York Times that until her husband died last year, he would often cry about being “trapped in this body.”

Prior to his prostate surgery, neither of the Taylors was aware that the surgeon performing the procedure had never used the robotic equipment without supervision, according to The New York Times. That doctor claimed in a deposition that during his training, he was never told that patients like Mr. Taylor, who weighed nearly 300 pounds, were not good candidates for robotic surgery. Additional depositions obtained by the Times indicate Intuitive sales representatives were often in the operating rooms, and even offered advice to newly trained surgeons who were having technical difficulties with the robot. The company’s sales representatives also appear to have had access to operating room schedules at some facilities, and were encouraged to “partner” with surgical teams “to review and select appropriate cases,” the Times said.

This is just the latest controversy to raise questions regarding the risks and benefits associated with the Da Vinci Surgical System, according to Wright & Schulte LLC. In January, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) launched a probe of the Da Vinci robot to determine if an increase in adverse events related to such procedures is a reflection of a real and growing problem. Recently, the American College of Gynecologists (ACOG) advised its members that robotic-assisted hysterectomy should not be the first choice for most women in need of the procedure. And earlier this month, the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine released a statement on its website expressing concern over an increasing number of reports of patient
