D1 Spas Unveils World's First Underwater Gym at IHRSA 2008
Date:3/7/2008

esigned with energy efficient heaters and pumps that result in monthly heating costs averaging just $35. The water is cleaned with ozone and UV light and the exteriors are made of maintenance-free, 100% recycled plastic milk jugs.

The research that Sanders and her team have done with groups of aquatic exercisers over the years underscores the fact that water can be used as a liquid weight machine with unique benefits. "Water's buoyancy reduces impact and supports the body for increased range of motion," explains Sanders. "And the natural resistance of water provides an individualized personal training environment. Water's viscosity or 'thickness' -- being about 800 times greater than air -- makes it an effective exercise environment in which to build muscular endurance. And using resistance tethers, like those featured in the AFS pool, provides additional core stabilization work."

Scientific research has also shown that water workout benefits include cardiovascular health, weight management, sleep enhancement and prenatal health. Water exercise also helps relieve arthritis, diabetes, depression and back pain.

Acclaimed fitness expert Derek Duke Noble will lead aquatic exercise demonstrations during the IHRSA trade show in a water-filled, Aqua Pro(R) 19, D1's largest swim spa. It's a full 10" taller than the other two models, featuring the longest and deepest swimming and exercise area. Noble and a group of fitness models will be demonstrating how to use the various pieces of equipment available with the AFS including: a fitness bar, "D" handles, ankle cuffs and tensor cords to work different muscle groups; adjustable body belt to walk or jog in place; rowing equipment as well as an adjustable water current to create an individualized swim program. The demonstrations will be a "sneak peek" for the Sanders and Noble developed AFS fitness video that will be released later this year.
