CyberKnife Center of Tampa Bay to Break Ground
TAMPA, Fla., Oct. 22 /PRNewswire/ -- The first of its kind in the Tampa area, the CyberKnife Center of Tampa Bay will break ground in January of 2008, and is scheduled to be operational by summer.
The CyberKnife Center of Tampa Bay, developed and operated by Tampa Bay Radiosurgical Associates, LLC, will operate as an "open" treatment center. It will be used by a large number of physicians from various institutions and practices, in order to provide whole-body radiosurgery treatment to the broadest number of patients.
The CyberKnife utilizes unique "image-guided" technology that is seamlessly integrated with intelligent robotics to deliver higher doses of targeted radiation to cancerous tumors almost anywhere in the body. It is proven to be effective in treating head, neck, spine, prostate, liver, lung and pancreatic cancers, as well as other tumors.
This non-invasive radiosurgery device can ablate tumors and other lesions, almost anywhere in the body, previously unreachable by other therapies. It can be used as a primary therapy -- or as an adjunct to surgery and other treatments. It is frequently considered a worthwhile alternative for patients who have failed other modalities. Developed at Stanford University, it has been used to treat tens of thousands of patients worldwide in over 100 facilities since 1994.
The CyberKnife is manufactured by Accuray, Inc., of Sunnyvale, California.
