Creighton University Welcomes New Faculty Member to Master of Public Health Program

Creighton University announces the hiring of LaShaune Johnson, Ph.D., who will teach in Creighton University’s online Master of Public Health program.

Professor Johnson graduated from Wellesley College with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Medieval/Renaissance Studies. She went on to earn a master’s degree in Sociology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she also earned her Ph.D., in Sociology with doctoral emphases in both Feminist Studies and Human Development. Before coming to Creighton, Johnson was a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Connecticut Health Center, working on a Type 2 diabetes prevention project. She has also been a postdoctoral fellow at the School of Health Professions at the University of Missouri.

As a graduate of the Head Start program for low-income children and a two-time cancer survivor, Johnson’s experiences have fueled her passion for research and teaching in public health. She is particularly interested in understanding the social, cultural and economic influences on cancer disparities of women of color and recently completed a Susan G. Komen foundation grant where she helped deliver a faith-based breast cancer education program in black churches in Missouri.

She is also committed to understanding the broader social influences on child health, particularly obesity, and has been involved recently in a number of projects related to child health issues.
