Creighton University Welcomes New Faculty Member to Master of Public Health Program
Date:6/10/2013

Omaha, Neb. (PRWEB) June 10, 2013

Creighton University announces the hiring of LaShaune Johnson, Ph.D., who will teach in Creighton University’s online Master of Public Health program.

Professor Johnson graduated from Wellesley College with a bachelor’s degree in Sociology and Medieval/Renaissance Studies. She went on to earn a master’s degree in Sociology from the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she also earned her Ph.D., in Sociology with doctoral emphases in both Feminist Studies and Human Development. Before coming to Creighton, Johnson was a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Connecticut Health Center, working on a Type 2 diabetes prevention project. She has also been a postdoctoral fellow at the School of Health Professions at the University of Missouri.

As a graduate of the Head Start program for low-income children and a two-time cancer survivor, Johnson’s experiences have fueled her passion for research and teaching in public health. She is particularly interested in understanding the social, cultural and economic influences on cancer disparities of women of color and recently completed a Susan G. Komen foundation grant where she helped deliver a faith-based breast cancer education program in black churches in Missouri.

She is also committed to understanding the broader social influences on child health, particularly obesity, and has been involved recently in a number of projects related to child health issues. She worked as a qualitative researcher on a Robert Wood Johnson Foundation-funded project about physical activity among children; is working as a qualitative researcher on a childhood obesity project in Missouri and is also working as an investigator on a planning grant funded by the American Academy of Pediatrics in Missouri, creating university-community partnerships with a diverse mix of faith-based organizations. She hopes to continue similar initiatives in the Omaha area.

As a professor teaching in Creighton’s MPH program, Johnson will bring a fresh perspective and help her students explore some of the many difficult public health issues facing policymakers, health care administrators and communities. The Master of Public Health curriculum mirrors the University’s Catholic, Jesuit values of social justice and service to others locally and globally by focusing on vulnerable and marginalized populations. Through a community-focused, interdisciplinary approach to epidemiology, biostatistics and health ethics, Creighton’s online MPH degree gives students the ability to help those at risk as they build the foundation for their own fulfilling careers. Program features include a dynamic core curriculum and a choice of two concentrations: Health Policy and Ethics, which focuses on the development of health policy at all levels, and Public Health Services Administration, emphasizing leadership and management strategies in the field.
