New York, NY (PRWEB) May 5, 2010 -- Contact lens manufacturer CooperVision has launched Contact Sports to inform teens that healthy vision can help improve their performance on and off the field. As part of the program, CooperVision is offering $25,000 in Gear Up Grants to ensure that community teams and athletes have what’s necessary to be at the top of their game – from the right sports equipment to free contact lenses. Ten grants in total will be awarded, and submissions will be accepted until June 25 online at www.mycontactsports.com.

With more and more teens participating in contact sports and the growing need for the right gear to give them a competitive edge on and off the field, leading global contact lens manufacturer CooperVision has launched Contact Sports, an exciting new education and community outreach program that informs teens about the importance of healthy vision and how it can help improve their performance on and off the field.

As a part of the program, CooperVision will give away $25,000 in grants to ensure that community teams and athletes have what’s necessary to be at the top of their game – from the right sports equipment to free contact lenses. Ten Gear Up Grants in total will be awarded, and submissions will be accepted until June 25, 2010 online at www.mycontactsports.com. There are also a number of helpful resources for teens and parents on the website, including information on contact lenses, a practitioner locator and savings offers.

To help spread the word to teens about Gear Up Grants, CooperVision has teamed up with gold-medal-winning soccer star Heather O'Reilly and WePlay, the largest online youth sports community. For Heather, changing to contact lenses in the 7th grade helped give her the competitive edge she needed to excel – not only enhancing her vision, but also boosting her confidence level. Now a professional soccer player, she has two gold medals to prove how important having the right gear is for an athlete. “I know how important this is because I started wearing contacts when I was 12, and I couldn’t believe the difference it made on the soccer field. I could finally see my opponents’ facial expressions and eye movements, and could even see the spin on the ball. For me, my contacts are just as important to my performance as my cleats and shin guards.”

CooperVision has also partnered with recognized Sports Vision Specialist Dr. Donald Teig to educate teens about the relationship between healthy vision and sports performance. Dr. Teig has found in his practice that teens’ athletic performance can really benefit from wearing contact lenses.
