Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery Pays Tribute to Volunteers at 8th Annual Recognition Celebration: Community Members Honored For 23,000 Hours of Service

Hartford, Connecticut (PRWEB) May 31, 2013

Connecticut Community for Addiction Recovery (CCAR), a leading national nonprofit organization that promotes recovery from alcohol and other drug addiction through advocacy, education, and service, successfully hosted its 8th Annual Volunteer Recognition Celebration. The event, which took place on April 26th, 2013 at A Villa Louisa in Bolton, CT, honored the men and women who have graciously volunteered their time and energy over the past year serving in a variety of roles in CCAR's Bridgeport, Hartford, and Willimantic Recovery Community Centers located in the greater Hartford, CT area. In just the past year alone, nearly 300 volunteers have provided over 23,000 hours of service to the recovery community.

The event drew a crowd of more than 150 guests, which included CCAR volunteers, staff, board members, and community partners. On the agenda for the evening were CCAR’s extensive presentation of volunteer awards, followed by dinner, dancing, and music. Among those recognized during the evening were the 94 CCAR volunteers who were in attendance, each of whom was presented with a certificate of appreciation for their service. In addition, 11 volunteers received CCAR’s Gold Presidential Award for over 500 hours of service. Among these individuals were Allen Grant, Barbara Shannon, Elizabeth Levine, Fred Richardson, Leeta Reed, Luis Reyes, Madeline Gonzalez, Mark Bogues, Ollie Cooper, Tesra Brokenberry, and Tyrone Johnson. An additional 16 volunteers were awarded the Silver Presidential Award for 250-499 hours of service and 37 were awarded the Bronze Presidential Award for 100-249 hours of service.

In addition to the volunteers who participated in the event, there were several esteemed guests on hand to address the group and honor them for their work. Included among these individuals were Bill Leary, CCAR Board President, Phillip Valentine, CCAR Executive Director, Patricia Remher, Commissioner, Department of Mental Health & Addiction Services (DMHAS), and Lori Szczygiel, Director, Connecticut Behavioral Health Partnership.

New to the event this year was the announcement of the winning entry for CCAR’s Recovery Walks! Logo Design Contest. Catherine Reevey, a volunteer from the Windham Recovery Community Center, was presented with a certificate and a plaque for her winning entry, which will be prominently featured in all promotional materials for the 2013 event. Recovery Walks! is an annual event and celebration that takes place for those in recovery from addiction to alcohol and other drugs as well as their families, friends, and supporters, to walk and share stories of hope and redemption due to recovery. This year’s walk will take place on Friday, September 27, 2013 in Bushnell Park.

According to Phillip Valentine, Executive Director of CCAR, “It was a privilege for CCAR to once again host this annual event as a way to honor those volunteers who have given so generously of their time and energy to our recovery community.” Mr. Valentine continued, “It is because of these individuals who so strongly believe in the importance of giving back to those in recovery that CCAR is able to put a face on recovery and provide services that inspire hope and healing”
