Congressman Buchanan Tours Florida Clinical Laboratory; Learns Vital Role in Patient Care
Date:2/18/2008

SARASOTA, Fla., Feb. 18 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-FL) will experience the vital and expanding role laboratory testing plays in patient care during a tour of the clinical laboratory facilities at Sarasota Pathology and Sarasota Memorial Hospital, Tuesday, Feb. 19.

Pathologists James White, MD and Robert Spencer, MD will host the tour for Congressman Buchanan, starting at Sarasota Pathology's laboratory at 10:30 am and continuing at Sarasota Memorial's laboratory at 11:15 am.

"Sarasota Pathology and Sarasota Memorial Hospital play an important role in the effort to meet the community's health care needs," said Congressman Buchanan. "I look forward to visiting their labs and discussing healthcare issues affecting my constituents."

Dr. White said the tour will highlight important trends in diagnostic healthcare and will provide an opportunity to demonstrate the critical role medical laboratories provide in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

"With the rapid pace of change in medicine today, and the advances in genetics testing, laboratories are becoming central players in clinical decision making," said Dr. White. "This tour will illustrate some of these advances, and will show how the laboratories function to support the healthcare needs of physicians and patients in the community."

Sarasota Pathology, an independent laboratory accredited by the College of American Pathologists, provides a wide range of technical and professional pathology services to hospitals and clinicians. Technical laboratory services include monoclonal antibodies, special and immunohistochemical stains, diagnostic panels, and therapeutic markers. Professional services include general histo- and immunopathology as well as cytopathology, hematopathology, flow cytometry and dermatopathology.

Sarasota Memorial Health Care System, an 806-bed regional medical center, is the second-largest acute care public hospital
