PITTSBURGH, Feb. 18 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Rep. Jason Altmire (D-PA) will experience the vital and expanding role laboratory testing plays in patient care during a tour of the clinical laboratory facilities at Magee-Womens Hospital Tuesday, Feb. 19.
Pathologist R. Marshall Austin, MD, will host the 5:30 P.M. tour for Rep. Altmire, who will view a Pap test and cancer slides through a multi-headed microscope.
"Magee-Womens Hospital's ongoing leadership in improving health care for women is a great resource for western Pennsylvania," Altmire said. "This tour will give me a first hand view of the vital role Magee's medical laboratory plays in providing patients with quality health care."
Dr. Austin says the tour will illustrate the medical laboratory's role as a key element of patient care and show how laboratory results provide a crucial thread that runs through the entire patient care process.
"Laboratory test results drive a significant portion of clinical decisions, from diagnosis to therapy," said Dr. Austin. "This tour will underscore how the medical laboratory contributes to the maintenance of wellness, the diagnosis of illness and the treatment of disease."
