EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn., Oct. 26 /PRNewswire/ -- Most people learn about long term care the hard way -- when they or a loved one needs care. Too often, that is when they find out that:
-- Long term care is expensive;
-- It is not covered under Medicare, your private health insurance,
disability or HMO plan; and
-- Medicaid will only pay for your long term care costs if you have very
limited income and assets. Even then, Medicaid is heavily biased toward
institutional, not home-based care.

Learning about long term care before you need it helps provide greater peace of mind, financial independence and flexibility in how and where you receive care. Long term care needs are best met when they are planned for! While no one likes to think about ever needing long term care someday, the reality is that many of us -- nearly 70% -- will need at least some type of long term care.
That is why, on October 15, 2007, the House of Representatives passed a congressional resolution (H. Con. Res. 133) supporting the goals and ideals of Long Term Care Awareness Week, November 4-10, 2007. The resolution recognizes that millions of individuals tap into hard-earned savings to pay for their long term care unless they have a plan in advance for handling these large expenses. The resolution further states that "advance planning ... will help protect caregivers' health, financial security and quality of life."
