Congress Approves FY2009 Omnibus Appropriations Bill with $900 Million for The Global Fund

h $2.75 billion over two years. With the $900 million appropriated, the Global Fund is much closer to meeting the demand for financing. Nevertheless, a shortfall of $350 million remains, delaying a number of approved grants.

"The Global Fund has demonstrated unprecedented need, and the U.S. has responded with unprecedented funding," continued Bilimoria. "We look forward to working with the Administration and the Congress to expand upon this longstanding support for the Global Fund."

The Global Fund is a unique global public/private partnership dedicated to attracting and disbursing additional resources to prevent and treat HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria. This partnership between governments, civil society, the private sector and affected communities represents a new approach to international health financing. The Global Fund works in close collaboration with other bilateral and multilateral organizations to supplement existing efforts dealing with the three diseases.
