Conference on Honduras 2009 Set for Copan Ruinas
Date:7/31/2009

WASHINGTON, July 31 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- projecthonduras.com announced that the 10th annual Conference on Honduras will be held in Copan Ruinas, Honduras on September 24-26, 2009. The event will bring together more than 250 representatives of over 110 medical brigades, universities, churches, hospitals, civic clubs and other non-governmental organizations (NGOs), as well as agencies and companies involved in volunteer work in Honduras.

"Despite the political problems Honduras has undergone during the past month due to the ousting of President Manuel Zelaya on June 28, I've never seriously considered cancelling or delaying the conference," said director Marco Caceres. "The reality is that the vast portion of Honduras remains extremely calm and most people have gone back to their daily routines."

The conference will provide an opportunity for volunteers to meet face to face and strengthen the relationships they have established through the projecthonduras.com network. More than 50 speakers will give presentations as part of eight panels. The aim is to present and exchange experiences and visions on current and proposed grassroots projects to help empower the people of Honduras in the areas of education, healthcare, clean water, caring for orphans, HIV/AIDS, and micro-credit. The theme of this year's conference will be, "Mobilizing the youth of Honduras to change the country". The US Agency for International Development (USAID) will host a workshop on partnership opportunities.

"While a few church mission teams cut short their visits to Honduras following Mr. Zelaya's arrest and exile, most of the organizations in our network have continued to send teams and have experienced no problems other than the normal delays one faces when traveling in a developing country," noted Caceres. "We are on pace to have nearly 250 conferees this year, which is about right for our event."
