Community Food Banks and Homeless Shelter to Receive Gift of 1,649 Cases of Food from Griffin Hospital Employees

Food delivery in one tractor trailer shipment on Thursday, April 16th at 9:30 a.m.

DERBY, Conn., April 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Griffin Hospital employees will donate 1,649 cases (27,900 cans, jars, packages) of food to the Spooner House homeless shelter and eight community food banks. Griffin Hospital serves a six-town region in South Central Connecticut with a combined population of 105,000.

The food will be delivered by tractor trailer in one shipment to Basement Systems warehouse, 25 Progress Ave., Seymour. Basement Systems has offered the use of their warehouse facility to receive the food and to serve as the distribution point for the food banks. The delivery truck will be greeted by about 60 Griffin employees. Representatives of the food banks will be at the Basement Systems warehouse for the delivery and to draw from the shipment items to stock their food banks.

Over the last nine years Griffin Hospital has held a celebration to recognize its selection by FORTUNE magazine as one of the "100 Best Companies to Work for in America" and to thank hospital employees, physicians and volunteers for creating a culture of exceptional care and mutual respect and support that has made Griffin a great place to work and receive care. Griffin is the only hospital in the country to be named to the FORTUNE list for ten years.

As part of past celebrations the hospital provided its more than 1,500 Griffin caregivers with a recognition gift. This year employees, after being named to the FORTUNE list for an unprecedented 10th time, encouraged hospital management to use the money normally spent on a gift to help the growing number of residents in need by making a donation to the community's food banks.

Last year, the Spooner House and the eight food banks provided 144,872 meals to 9,865 people. The food banks are currently seeing record requests for food assistance and at times have had a waiti
