CoSentry and Alegent Health Announce Collaboration for Construction of an Enterprise-Class Data Center

OMAHA, Neb., Jan. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, executives from CoSentry, a leading provider of data center and managed technical services, and Alegent Health, one of the nation's premier healthcare providers, announced formation of a joint venture to construct and operate an enterprise class data center in Papillion, Neb.

The Midlands Data Center will provide the high availability requirements of Alegent Health's hospital and clinical applications along with other security requirements for the electronic storage and retrieval of vital medical records. This state-of-the-art facility will also address the high-density, high-availability computing requirements for many of the region's public and private organizations served by CoSentry. By combining the data center requirements of CoSentry and Alegent Health, significant economies of scale will be realized in construction costs, cooling and electrical infrastructure investments as well as on-going operational expenses especially in the area of energy utilization efficiencies.

The facility is designed to be a Tier IV data center and will be constructed utilizing breakthrough concept designs for power, cooling, network and security infrastructure. "This is a tremendous collaboration effort by both partners that allows us to focus on our primary goal - patient care," said Alegent Health Sr. Vice President and Chief Information Officer Ken Lawonn. "Our Mission to provide the highest quality care drives our dedication to innovation in technology. This data center will ensure our records, which are vital to patient safety, are secure and always accessible."

The first phase of the Midlands Data Center will be a 50,000 square foot structure that will have the ability to withstand up to 250 mph winds and will be constructed outside all flood zones. Built as a high availability, hardened facility, this structure will provide a safe and secure environment for the Health Information Systems and medical record management of Alegent Health. In addition, the data center will be used as a hosting and collocation facility for CoSentry's clients and is scheduled to open in the fall of 2009. CoSentry is planning to add a second building on the site.

Morrissey Engineering, a recognized Nebraska based consulting and engineering design firm, has been integral to the project from inception. According to George Morrissey, president of Morrissey Engineering, "The Midlands Data Center is designed to take advantage of emerging concepts and technologies in managing electrical distribution and cooling efficiencies to deliver on Alegent Health and CoSentry's commitment to significantly reduce the carbon footprint of their IT operations. Energy costs to power and cool IT equipment make up a significant portion of the operating expenses of today's data centers and the Midlands Data Center has the design characteristics that will deliver significant energy savings."

"The timing of this facility is important," added Mike Steffan, president and CEO of CoSentry. "We've been driven by client demand and regulatory requirements to bring a facility like the Midlands Data Center online. This facility can accommodate local, regional and national clients who are battling the ever growing challenges of power consumption, environmental controls and the voracious growth in processor demand."

"We are thrilled to partner with Alegent on the construction of the Midlands Data Center," said Patrick Duffy, a partner with McCarthy Capital Corporation, a private equity firm based in Omaha and a significant investor in CoSentry along with Waitt Corporation and CoSentry management. "This new data center will enable CoSentry to provide mission critical services to an even larger base of enterprise customers."

The CoSentry network currently has three data centers operating in Kansas City, Mo., Omaha, Neb. and Sioux Falls, S.D. The centers are interconnected to provide a powerful array of services across a secure multi-layer cloud network. The data centers are SAS70 certified, HIPAA and PCI compliant and are also GLBA and Sarbanes Oxley enabling.

"It's a truly rewarding experience when a project of this scope and magnitude comes together in the Greater Omaha area," commented David G. Brown, president and CEO of the Greater Omaha Chamber of Commerce. "The Midlands Data Center will not only benefit the individuals and organizations involved, it will also create new jobs, protect vital records and promote the region as a data processing hub. Overall, the impact of having such a valuable asset available to businesses considering the Greater Omaha area for their own growth and expansion is invaluable."

Construction for the Midlands Data Center has begun and information is available by calling (888) 708-0014.
