Cleveland Conference: Quality Healthcare Can and Should Cost Less
Date:3/16/2009

ate health insurance coverage. An estimated 30 cents of every dollar we spend on healthcare is spent on unnecessary and even unsafe care. Underuse, misuse and overuse of healthcare takes many forms, often exposing patients to unnecessary harm and squanders resources that could be used to provide services to the 61 million Americans who lack adequate insurance and access to the healthcare system.

Overuse has been identified by the National Priorities Partnership - a group of 28 organizations from across the healthcare system - as a National Priority for healthcare reform. The current economic crisis highlights the growing need for affordable healthcare that is free of waste for every patient.

The mission of the National Quality Forum is to improve the quality of American healthcare by setting national priorities and goals for performance improvement, endorsing national consensus standards for measuring and publicly reporting on performance, and promoting the attainment of national goals through education and outreach programs. NQF, a nonprofit organization (qualityforum.org) with diverse stakeholders across the public and private health sectors, was established in 1999 and is based in Washington, DC.
