Clearwater, FL Periodontist, Dr. Stephen Kobernick Cites Recent Periodontal Study Urging Patients to Seek Gum Disease Treatment
Date:6/12/2013

Clearwater, FL (PRWEB) June 12, 2013

A new study released by the American Academy of Periodontology (AAP) reinforces the importance of seeking gum disease treatment before it begins affecting overall health. Since nearly half of adults in the United States have some form of periodontal disease, Dr. Stephen Kobernick and other dental professionals want to use the AAP’s findings to educate patients about the instrumental role that periodontal health plays in maintaining overall health. Dr. Kobernick, a periodontist in Clearwater, Florida, urges patients to read the AAP’s reports and learn more about their gum disease treatment options, including laser gum surgery.

The AAP, in collaboration with the European Federation of Periodontology (EFP), recently published a series of reports with evidence linking periodontal disease to several systemic diseases, such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease. The reports provide strong scientific evidence suggesting that periodontitis, the advanced stage of gum disease, increases patients’ risk for cardiovascular disease. Because of this link, the reports recommend that dental professionals address other risk factors, including obesity, tobacco use, and hypertension, with patients when discussing treatment.

Published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology as well as the Journal of Periodontology, the reports also reveal an independent link between moderate to severe periodontitis and diabetes. Since periodontal interventions, such as the Laser Assisted New Attachment Procedure (LANAP), may provide favorable results with some patients, the study recommends incorporating routine comprehensive periodontal assessments as part of an ongoing diabetes management program.

The studies also provide evidence indicating a relationship between periodontal disease and several other systemic diseases, including chronic kidney disease, cognitive impairment, obesity, chronic kidney disease, metabolic syndrome, and cancer. Although additional research is required to gain a more thorough understanding of these relationships, patients should be aware that the associations do exist.

Patients suffering from gum disease and any of the mentioned health issues should know that they now have access to a laser protocol that is less invasive than traditional surgery. Dr. Kobernick belongs to an elite group of dental professionals in the country who offer LANAP, a less invasive treatment alternative that uses the only FDA cleared dental laser on the market. Unlike traditional surgery, which requires scalpels and sutures to remove bacteria, LANAP uses a special laser to target only the infected areas while leaving the healthy gum tissue intact. As a result, patients experience less pain, discomfort, and gum recession in addition to potentially saving their natural teeth.
