Clearview Treatment Programs to Hold Workshop on Evidence-Based Treatment for Dual Diagnoses

On Friday, June 14, 2013, Clearview Treatment Programs will present “Integrative Treatment for Dual Diagnoses: Evidence-Based Treatments That Work,” in Venice Beach, Calif.

The clinical workshop will provide participants practical knowledge of Motivational Interviewing, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT):

  • Motivational Interviewing is a goal-oriented form of treatment that is designed to help with ambivalence, motivation, and change, and can be highly effective in dual diagnosis treatment. Motivational Interviewing includes a series of four stages: pre-contemplative, contemplative, preparation and action, followed by the maintenance stage.
  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is a therapy that uses mindfulness and acceptance strategies to build psychological flexibility. One of the core tenets of ACT is accepting one’s painful emotions, and to develop a new set of values to help overcome the negativity they experience in life. ACT is very effective with clients who suffer from addictions and dual diagnosis.
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) helps clients address their dysfunctional thinking and behavior that perpetuate problems with mental health and substance abuse disorders. It examines problematic symptoms that are persistent because the clients need skills to challenge their underlying irrational thinking about how they view themselves, others, and the world.

“These evidence-based treatments have proven to be extremely effective when it comes to treating dual diagnosis,” said Michael Roy, LCSW, MSW, executive director of Clearview Treatment Programs, a premier dual diagnosis treatment center in Los Angeles. “This workshop provides a concise overview of how they can work for therapists who treat that population.”

Featured speakers at the workshop will be Chelsea Cawood, Ph.D., therapist at Clearview Women’s Center for Borderline Personality Disorder; Matt Swank, MSW, LCSW, therapist at Clearview Center for Psychiatric Disorders and Addictions; and Nicole Zaha, Psy.D., therapist at Clearview Women’s Center.

The workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Clearview Center in Venice Beach. Admission to the workshop is $35, which includes a light breakfast. The clinical workshop is offering 3.5 continuing education units for MFTs and LCSWs.
