Award-Winning Actor Pledges to Spread Reeve’s Message of Hope, Awareness of Paralysis Resource Center

Short Hills, NJ (Vocus) March 4, 2010 -- The Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation today welcomed actor/writer Danny Arroyo to its extended family as a Reeve Foundation ambassador. Arroyo, who won a “Best Actor” award at a film festival for his work in the indie drama, ''Chimera House,'' joins several Hollywood talents, including Daryl “Chill” Mitchell (a 2010 NAACP Image Award winner), Dave Annable, Odette Yustman, Dustin Nguyen, Angela Rockwood-Nguyen, and Wilmer Valderrama as ambassadors. All of them are committed to raising awareness of the Reeve Foundation’s efforts to improve the quality of life for those living with paralysis and their caregivers, and its Paralysis Resource Center (PRC) -- a critical component of its mission.

“The reason I am an actor today is because of Christopher Reeve,” said Arroyo. “I caught the ‘acting bug’ after seeing an interview with Chris about playing ‘Superman;’ and then, watching his movies... I was hooked. Chris to me as a kid growing up was, and always will be, the comic icon Superman. He’s even in my demo reel!

“As I got older and saw not just the trauma Chris suffered, but how he endured and continued to achieve and inspire others, he then became to me a real ‘Super - Man.’ Thanks to social media, the Reeve Foundation and I ‘found’ each other, and I’m thrilled to join them as an ambassador. The incredible work that they do deserves as much attention as it can get, and I’m going to do whatever I can to help them.”

Originally from New York/New Jersey, Arroyo has shared the silver screen with some of today’s biggest stars, including Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Thomas Jane, Rosanna Arquette and Salma Hayek. Big screen credits include ''Lethal Weapon 4,'' ''The Velocity of Gary'' and ''White Rush,'' ''Kill Katie Malone,'' ''Spring Breakdown'' and ''Repo Chick.'' On the small screen, he has made guest appearances on countless hit shows, including ''Without a Trace,'' ''24,'' ''My Own Worst Enemy,'' ''General Hospital'' and ''E.R.''

Currently, Arroyo’s original script, ''Gamers,'' a suspense cop thriller about the phenomenon of obsessive videogame playing, has been optioned by a production company. Arroyo is also a member of the Performers Peer Group Executive Committee (PGEC) for the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, where he joins a select few to discuss, vote and plan various TV Academy policies and functions.

“A lot of people have been inspired by Chris and Dana,” said Joe Canose, Vice President, Quality of Life for the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation, “but Danny’s passion is truly endearing. You might say this is a match made on Krypton. I know Danny will do everything he can to help us get the word out about the Foundation and the resources we offer, such as our Paralysis Resource Center, particularly as we mobilize social media to do so.”

Arroyo will kick off his ambassadorship by speaking of his role as a Reeve Foundation ambassador at 11 a.m. PST at the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce’s 7th Annual Awards Media Center in Hollywood, Calif., today.

Located in Short Hills, N.J., the Paralysis Resource Center (PRC) is a program of the Christopher & Dana Reeve Foundation that offers resources on spinal cord injury, paralysis and mobility-related disabilities. The PRC’s mission is to be a comprehensive, national source of information for people living with paralysis and their caregivers to promote health, foster involvement in the community and improve quality of life. It provides quality information on paralysis in a variety of ways; through highly-trained Information Specialists who can be contacted via telephone at 800-539-7309 or e-mail; through in-person visits to its office; or through its national clearinghouse library of paralysis-related publications available for free through interlibrary loan programs. The PRC is supported by a Cooperative Agreement Number 1U59DD000338 from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). For more information, please visit www.paralysis.org.
