Child Sexual Abuse Lawsuit Victim Awarded $3.5 Million by Brooklyn Supreme Court Referee, Plaintiff Represented by Alonso Krangle LLP
Date:6/17/2013

New York, NY (PRWEB) June 17, 2013

Alonso Krangle LLP, an experienced personal injury law firm that represents the victims of child sexual abuse and their co-counsel, the Zalkin Law Firm, announce they have prevailed in a child sexual abuse lawsuit the firms filed on behalf of a Brooklyn man. According to court records, a Brooklyn Supreme Court Referee on Wednesday awarded $3.5 million to the Plaintiff, who was allegedly sexually abused for years by his cousin. Following the Referee’s finding in his favor, the Plaintiff told the New York Daily News that he hoped his child sexual abuse lawsuit will help other victims in his insular Jewish community. According to his lawsuit, the 24-year-old Plaintiff was allegedly sexually abused by his cousin starting at the age 6. The sexual abuse lawsuit complaint further alleged that the abuse took place between 1996 and 1999 at a vacation home, at the cousin’s home in Brooklyn, and the synagogue Vishnitz in Crown Heights. In 2004, the Plaintiff reported the molestation to a relative who informed his yeshiva. The dean of the yeshiva agreed to tell the Plaintiff’s parents, but only on the condition that the name of the alleged perpetrator not be revealed.

David Krangle, a partner with Alonso Krangle LLP, told the New York Daily News the Brooklyn Referee’s award included $1 million for past pain and suffering and $2.5 million for future pain and suffering. The Defendant, who moved to Israel shortly after the child sexual abuse lawsuit was filed, did not dispute the charges made in the complaint.

Alonso Krangle LLP Continues to Support the New York Child Victims Act

The New York Daily News reported that the Brooklyn DA has not been able to pursue criminal charges against the Defendant because the state’s statute of limitations has passed. According to Alonso Krangle LLP, New York’s statute of limitations on child sexual abuse cases is one of the most restrictive in the country. Under current law, victims of child sexual abuse must file criminal and/or civil charges before they reach their 23rd birthday. Alonso Krangle’s experience with survivors of child molestation has made it clear to the firm’s attorneys that the trauma associated with this crime often makes it difficult for many victims to confront their abuser until they are well into adulthood. Sponsored by Assemblywoman Caroline Markey, the New York Child Victim’s Act would extend the state’s statute of limitations to a victim’s 28th birthday. The Child Victim’s Act would also provide a temporary, one-year window in which victims of any age could file a child sexual abuse lawsuit in civil court.
