Journey for Control Campaign: Small Changes Can Have a Big Effect on

Managing Diabetes

WHITEHOUSE STATION, N.J., March 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Chef, nutritionist and cookbook author, Laura Diaz-Brown, known as Chef LaLa, is encouraging people with type 2 diabetes to recognize that small changes, including food choices, can have a big effect on managing diabetes. Through the Journey for Control campaign, supported by Merck & Co., Inc., Chef LaLa will be visiting selected people to help make over their favorite Latino recipes into diabetes-friendly dishes. The Healthy Menu Makeover Program with Chef LaLa, which launches nationally today, is conducted in collaboration with the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE). To learn more about the campaign or to be considered for a Healthy Menu Makeover, visit JourneyForControl.com.

Diabetes is a rapidly growing health problem in the country. Nearly 21 million people in the United States (7 percent of the population) have diabetes, and the incidence of diabetes is high among Hispanic American adults as almost one in 10 of whom suffer from this disease. Type 2 diabetes is a condition diagnosed by elevated blood sugar or glucose, and it accounts for about 90 to 95 percent of all diagnosed cases. With type 2 diabetes, the body may not make enough insulin, the insulin that the body produces may not work as well as it should, and/or the liver may release too much glucose.

"Diabetes is a subject that is very close to my heart. Having seen three of my grandparents and my father struggle with type 2 diabetes, I am personally dedicated to sharing my recipes and cooking tips with U.S. Hispanics," said Chef LaLa. "As a chef and a nutritionist, I have dedicated a big part of my life to showing people that it is possible to enjoy healthy Latino food without sacrificing traditional family flavor. That's what this campaign is all about: small changes having a big effect.
