Centice Corporation Releases a Two Part Whitepaper on its PASS Rx Pharmacy Quality Solution
Date:4/15/2010

Centice Corporation®, a pioneer in drug verification and safety products, announced today that it has released a third party, two-part whitepaper by industry expert, Kenneth R. Baker, RPh, J.D., titled Verifying Quality-The Keystone of a Quality Assurance System.

Morrisville, NC (PRWEB) April 15, 2010 -- Centice Corporation®, a pioneer in drug verification and safety products, announced today that it has released a third party, two-part whitepaper by industry expert, Kenneth R. Baker, RPh, J.D., titled Verifying Quality-The Keystone of a Quality Assurance System.

Part one of the whitepaper addresses an overview of medication errors in retail and hospital pharmacies and introduces the PASS Rx® Pharmaceutical Authentication Sensor System that assists pharmacists in reducing these errors.

PASS Rx scientifically verifies the majority of oral solid medications using spectroscopy and machine vision technology. The device alerts the pharmacist or technician of any discrepancy or question of accuracy and is designed to improve quality in pharmacies. To further secure patient safety and to offer more workflow coverage in the pharmacy, barcode verification is used for non-oral solid medications. Medi-Span® images are also provided for the added benefit of visual comparison to what the drug should look like. Ultimately, PASS Rx will be able to verify virtually all prescriptions dispensed in a typical pharmacy.

The most sacred professional duty of the pharmacist is to “First, do no harm.” With over three and one half billion prescriptions filled annually, there is room for error. According to Auburn University of College Pharmacy there is a 0.1% “significant error rate” in a pharmacy. This means that on average, for every one thousand prescriptions dispensed, a pharmacy in the United States will dispense one prescription that contains an error with at least, the potential to cause serious injury, death or one potential lawsuit every week.

According to another study by Pharmacists Mutual Insurance Company, over eighty percent of all claims reported over the past two decades were from dispensing the wrong drug (49.7%), the wrong strength (27.8%) or mislabeling (8.9%). The PASS Rx system was developed to reduce these statistics by scientifically verifying the type and strength of drugs before they are dispensed.

Part two of the whitepaper explains in detail how the PASS Rx device works and how it can be incorporated into the continuous quality improvement (CQI) workflow of pharmacies. Every good CQI system will use several best practices; this report suggests that working in conjunction with PASS Rx, a pharmacy can reduce the risk of a medication error injuring a patient, prevent lawsuits, provide peace of mind and save reputations.

”In my profession, I am always looking for and consulting on better ways to improve our pharmacy practices. When learning about Centice and the PASS Rx system, I was impressed with this new technological solution to reduce errors and improve quality, therefore I was pleased to write this whitepaper for the pharmacy community,” said Kenneth Baker.

Pharmacists are good at what they do, as evidenced by the high ranking of pharmacists in the Gallup Poll, however they are not perfect. Technology such as PASS Rx provides a tool, which when added to the pharmacists’ thought and decision making process, will help to reduce errors.

“We are pleased to be working with Ken Baker, an expert in the field in which Centice is also making a positive difference – pharmacy medication errors and patient safety. Ken has been instrumental in relaying the information needed to educate pharmacies on the problems of drug errors and the solutions that are available to them in the form of PASS Rx technology and quality workflow systems,” said Scott Albert, Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Centice.
