Center on Budget and Policy Priorities Publishes Congressional Testimony Regarding Rise in Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) Payments in United States
Date:4/2/2013

Atlanta, GA (PRWEB) April 02, 2013

Rechtman & Spevak is a law firm based in Atlanta that represents clients who need help with several different types of legal matters that include personal injury cases, workers’ compensation issues and Social Security Disability matters. The attorneys at the firm would like to share with the public the information offered recently by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities when a Senior Fellow testified before Congress regarding both the growth and the current size of the Social Security Disability Insurance program that is administered by the Social Security Administration, or the SSA.

The Congressional testimony, which was published on the CBPP Web site on March 20, 2013, was a transcript of statements provided to the Subcommittee on Social Security Committee on Ways and Means of the U.S. House of Representatives by Kathy A. Ruffing, a Senior Fellow at the organization. This testimony revealed several different facts and figures that relate to Social Security Disability Insurance, which is also known as SSDI. The most wide-ranging statistic that the testimoney provided involved the amount spent by the federal government on SSDI on an annual basis, which currently sits at approximately $260 billion per year.

Kathy A. Ruffing went on to state that there are nearly 9 million Americans who currently receive SSDI benefits, and that this number has doubled since the year 1995, when more than 4 million Americans were taking part in this program. Aside from these facts, the article attempts to analyze reasons as to why the SSDI program is growing at such a fast rate.

The testimony stated that three factors are the reasons why SSDI is a growing program, including: (1) the population of the United States is aging in a collective sense; (2) Congress has raised the retirement age for Social Security retirement benefits; and (3) more women have entered the workforce over the past 30 years, and more women have become eligible for SSDI benefits.

Rechtman & Spevak is a law firm whose members serve the public as Social Security Disability lawyers, and the firm would like the public to be aware that more people are becoming eligible to receive SSDI benefits because they are deemed to be unable to work productively. People who have been injured or who are otherwise unable to work because of a medical problem should take steps to review their legal rights.
