Celebrating UC Success Contest Seeks to Educate and Inspire Ulcerative Colitis Patients
Date:3/11/2009

d it difficult to talk about their disease with family, friends and co-workers. Because of this, common everyday activities like going to work, planning a day at the mall, spending time with family and friends or eating at a restaurant become great sources of stress. However, some people living with UC say that being open about their disease and finding the best personal way to deal with these situations are important first steps in taking control.

"Entering last year's Celebrating UC Success essay contest allowed me to meet others who have gone through similar experiences as I have and sharing stories can be very motivating," said Patty Kunze, grand prize finalist from last year's Celebrating UC Success contest. "It is so important for patients who successfully manage their disease to show others exactly how they have been able to achieve comfort in their daily lives. Entering the Celebrating UC Success contest gives UC patients and their loved ones a way to do that."

Many of last year's contest entries expressed that upon diagnosis, there was a degree of fear that prevented patients from doing certain things that they enjoyed. Knowledge of what has worked for others helps to eliminate some of that fear. Further, it was clear that basic accomplishments -- sitting through a child's soccer game, going to work, eating their favorite meals -- were often the result of a patient's knowledge of, and confidence in, specific techniques that allowed them greater control over their UC symptoms.

"The Celebrating UC Success program was founded on the idea that members of the UC community can be excellent resources to one another for strength, for support and, perhaps most importantly, for inspiration," said Dan Hecht, P&GP General Manager - North America. "For the 2009 contest, however, we want to do more than just inspire UC patients to succeed; we want to provide them with knowledge
