Companies currently puzzling over paltry Twitter numbers while the amount of new fans gained by their competitors seems to be rocketing every higher, should read business coach Casey Gollan's latest news bulletin titled How to get people to follow you on Twitter.
Gollan actually goes on to discuss nine different approaches to gaining new Twitter followers.
"Follow my advice and not only will you increase your number of followers and make the social media site start working for your business, but there's a very good chance you’ll even start to enjoy it," says Gollan.
The main piece of advice that’s worth knowing, he says, is that quality is better than quantity when it comes to followers. In other words, he advises that companies should be selective in who they attempt to acquire as a follower on the social media site.
“I’d rather follow (and be followed by) people that I actually have some things in common with, who are eager to interact with me, and who I can work with to grow our businesses,” says Gollan.
“By far 500 eager, interactive and responsive followers are worth so much more to me than 5000 followers who I have nothing in common with.”
One way to ensure companies are not missing out on Twitter action and updates is to acquire a Twitter management tool such as HootSuite or TweetDeck, says Gollan. Both of these are free at the basic level.
Companies which already have a successful blog should embed a Twitter icon on the site, says Gollan, to make it easier for individuals to follow them. The 'Tweet this' button has a similar function and can be added to the end of blog posts.
Another way to inform customers that a company has a Twitter presence is to embed a Twitter widget on the business website. This automatically updates company Tweets. Companies unsure of how to upload this can read Gollan's step-by-step guide in his update How to Get People to Follow You on Twitter.
"If you want to get someone’s attention then it’s always a good idea to ask their opinion, says Gollan. "People sometimes can’t help themselves answering. As such Tweets which ask a question are far more likely to get a respond than those which proclaim a statement of fact. Fuelling a debate, either on your own Twitter account or joining in an already begun argument on another Twitter account is also another means of eliciting further followers.
A sure-fire way to increase follower count on Twitter is to offer some sort of company giveaway where people have to come to the Twitter account and sign up in order to access it. This works especially well if a company is offering a free advice and information book to download.
Retweeting is a also good way to increase followers as this will show up on the Twitter timeline of the original account. In doing so it exposes the company's Twitter account to more followers.
