Morford spent 15 years of his career prosecuting high-profile corruption and organized crime cases in Ohio. He began his career as a trial attorney specializing in tax litigation for the Internal Revenue Service's Office of Chief Counsel. He has received numerous awards and recognition for his work, including being named the Most Outstanding Assistant United States Attorney in the Nation in 2005, a Distinguished Service Award from the Attorney General in 2003 and two awards for superior performance by the Attorney General in 1996 and 2000. In 1999, the Cleveland branch of the FBI named him Attorney of the Year.
Morford received his juris doctorate from Valparaiso University's School of Law and bachelor's degree in Economics from Hope College.
