A graduate of the University of Virginia and the Duke University School of Medicine, he interned at the Johns Hopkins Hospital and completed the residency in general surgery at the University of Virginia Hospital. He is the author of numerous papers in peer-reviewed journals, and memberships include the Society of Surgical Oncology and the American Society of Clinical Oncology.
