California Walnut Board Launches Fresh New Website
Date:10/1/2009

FOLSOM, Calif., Oct. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- Walnut lovers visiting the California Walnuts website at walnuts.org will find even more reasons to love the consumer-favorite, tasty and nutritious nut. The California Walnut Board announced today that it has revamped its website that now offers more resource information for health, food, and industry professionals, "Smart Living" tips as well as delicious recipes for even the most discerning taste buds.

Health professionals will find valuable nutritional information that they can share with their patients and clients such as how walnuts can impact cardiovascular risk factors. A wide variety of free Patient Education Materials are available to download or health professionals can order brochures to be mailed to their office. Additionally, a California Walnuts Scientific Summary allows them to explore other benefits of walnuts' unique nutritional profile, including antioxidants and essential omega-3 fats.(1,2)

Whether searching for school lunch, restaurant or bakery menu ideas, food professionals will be inspired when they discover the variety of ways they can include walnuts in their recipes. Plus, tips on how to store walnuts in order to maintain quality and freshness are also available. Finally, industry professionals can read through agricultural news and keep up-to-date on regulatory information.

In an effort to help people embrace a smart eating style that is long on taste and convenience and short on scolding, a Smart Living section offers assistance with smartening-up shopping lists and meal planning strategies. Dr. Michael Roizen, cofounder of RealAge and coauthor of the popular YOU series, has teamed up with celebrated cookbook author and James Beard Hall of Fame member Mollie Katzen to create a Smart Menu that provides consumers with easy, popular recipe makeovers. Guests can also sign up for a free quarterly newsletter that supplies tips on uses for walnuts and updates on nutritional and health benefits.

For the foodies craving delectable dishes, a modernized Recipes section allows guests to peruse different collections, such as entertaining, grilling, picnicking and snacking, as well as by course including everything from appetizers to desserts. Visitors who create a My Recipes account, will be able to save their favorite recipes in their own personal online recipe box, making access to their favorite dishes just a click away.

To kick off the launch of the website, the California Walnut Board has invited consumers to heat up their kitchen by entering the Holiday Baking Challenge Starring Walnuts. Entrants who submit a stellar recipe are entered for a chance to win a KitchenAid Mixer and other valuable prizes. For those who don't have a recipe in mind they will find inspiration from award winning pastry chef Emily Luchetti. Contest runs October 15 through December 4, 2009.

The California walnut industry is made up of over 4,000 growers and 62 handlers. The growers and handlers are represented by two entities, the California Walnut Board (CWB) and the California Walnut Commission (CWC).

California Walnut Board

The Walnut Marketing Board was established in 1948 to represent the walnut growers and handlers of California. In April 2008, the Walnut Marketing Board became the California Walnut Board to provide origin designation to the product it represents. The Board is funded by mandatory assessments of the handlers. The CWB is governed by a Federal Walnut Marketing Order. The Board promotes usage of walnuts in the United States through publicity and educational programs. The Board also provides funding for walnut production and post-harvest research.

California Walnut Commission

The California Walnut Commission, established in 1987, is funded by mandatory assessments of the growers. The Commission is an agency of the State of California that works in concurrence with the Secretary of the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA). The CWC is mainly involved in health research and export market development activities.
