dency program in anesthesiology and can work without the supervision of a doctor, whereas an anesthetist is a nurse that is board certified in anesthesia and works under the supervision of a doctor. An anesthesiologist has much more extensive training than an anesthetist.

Anesthesia mistakes happen sometimes during surgeries, but most of the time they can be quickly corrected so the patient rarely ever finds out about it. It’s only after a serious injury takes place, including a serious brain injury or death, that the patient or the family ever becomes aware of the anesthesia mistake. “Anesthesia cases can often be challenging cases to prove, because the patient has been sedated and the only witnesses are the other medical professionals in the operating room, who may or may not be aware of what happened during the anesthesia error,” states Dr. Fagel.

Surgical procedures, which require the use of anesthesia, may be performed in a hospital, doctor’s office, or surgery center. “One problem with surgery performed outside of a hospital setting is when a patient runs into a serious medical emergency because of problems with the anesthesia,” explains Dr. Fagel. “When a medical emergency occurs in a non-hospital environment, the medical facilities usually do not have access to specialized critical care nurses, emergency physicians, or equipment necessary to cope with the emergency. The medical facility will have to contact an ambulance; meanwhile the patient’s medical condition may quickly escalate from a serious emergency to a critical life or death situation,” warns Dr. Fagel.
