California Medical Malpractice Lawyer Dr. Bruce Fagel Explains the Danger of Anesthesia Injuries from Medical Negligence
Date:1/24/2013

Los Angeles, CA (PRWEB) January 24, 2013

Dr. Bruce Fagel, who recently spoke at the American Heart Association National meeting and will be appearing on PBS “Need to Know” January 25th at 8:30 pm PST, is a leading California medical malpractice lawyer and a licensed medical doctor. Dr. Fagel has successfully handled many medical malpractice cases involving anesthesia mistakes that lead to severe injuries or death to patients. His law firm, the Law Offices of Dr. Bruce G. Fagel & Associates, has tried and settled more medical malpractice cases for injured patients than any other attorney in California, and has obtained over one billion dollars in verdicts and settlements for his clients.

“There are many misconceptions about anesthesia injuries,” states Dr. Fagel. “Most people never think about the fact that anesthesia mistakes happen sometimes during surgeries and this includes routine elective procedures such as plastic surgery or weight loss surgery, not just complicated emergency procedures. A patient may even run into anesthesia problems in the post anesthesia care unit after completing a successful surgical procedure. Any surgery carries with it a risk of injury or death, including from anesthesia mistakes.”

Anesthetists and anesthesiologists play a valuable part with any surgery. Not only do they provide pain relief for the patient during surgery, but they also have control over the patient’s core life functions during the operation, including their breathing and heart rate. A patient who is given anesthesia requires careful monitoring to make sure they are not having a negative reaction to the drug being administered or problems from the operation that may be occurring. An anesthesiologist is a physician who completes an accredited residency program in anesthesiology and can work without the supervision of a doctor, whereas an anesthetist is a nurse that is board certified in anesthesia and works under the supervision of a doctor. An anesthesiologist has much more extensive training than an anesthetist.

Anesthesia mistakes happen sometimes during surgeries, but most of the time they can be quickly corrected so the patient rarely ever finds out about it. It’s only after a serious injury takes place, including a serious brain injury or death, that the patient or the family ever becomes aware of the anesthesia mistake. “Anesthesia cases can often be challenging cases to prove, because the patient has been sedated and the only witnesses are the other medical professionals in the operating room, who may or may not be aware of what happened during the anesthesia error,” states Dr. Fagel.

Surgical procedures, which require the use of anesthesia, may be performed in a hospital, doctor’s office, or surgery center. “One problem with surgery performed outside of a hospital setting is when a patient runs into a serious medical emergency because of problems with the anesthesia,” explains Dr. Fagel. “When a medical emergency occurs in a non-hospital environment, the medical facilities usually do not have access to specialized critical care nurses, emergency physicians, or equipment necessary to cope with the emergency. The medical facility will have to contact an ambulance; meanwhile the patient’s medical condition may quickly escalate from a serious emergency to a critical life or death situation,” warns Dr. Fagel.
