California Medical Association Joins MedicAlert Foundation to Offer Medical Identification for Members and Patients

Alliance designed to benefit Californians with medical conditions

TURLOCK, Calif., May 20 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The California Medical Association (CMA), representing 35,000 physicians in all modes of practice and specialties, and the MedicAlert Foundation, the leading nonprofit providing identification and emergency medical information services, have teamed up to provide patients living with chronic conditions, allergies or special needs with a personalized medical identification and 24-hour emergency response service.

"We are delighted by our new relationship with the CMA," said Dr. Martin Kabat, President and CEO of MedicAlert. "MedicAlert was founded by a physician to protect people in times of medical emergencies and we believe this relationship goes right to the heart of our mission and history. The CMA has a history of outstanding efforts as an advocate for Californians; therefore, we are privileged to have the opportunity to work in alliance with them."

The MedicAlert program will provide comprehensive services that can safeguard and identify individuals in an emergency. Members enrolled in the program will receive a personalized medical ID and wallet card that provide emergency responders with identification information and details on any critical medical conditions or life-threatening allergies. All calls to the Foundation's 24-hour emergency response center are answered by MedicAlert staff who provide vital information to first responders.

The MedicAlert program also ensures that designated contacts or caregivers will be notified if an individual requires emergency medical treatment in a caregiver's absence. Family and caregivers can also rest assured that any time a member wearing a MedicAlert ID has been treated or located, MedicAlert will contact them immediately.

"Lifesaving care in the emergency room demands information," said Dr. Dev A. GnanaDev, CMA President. "The MedicAlert program helps ensure that vital medical care information will be available to emergency physicians who treat acute illnesses and injuries throughout California."

California Medical Association is an advocacy organization that represents 35,000 California physicians. Dedicated to the health of Californians, CMA is active in the legal, legislative, reimbursement and regulatory areas on behalf of California physicians and their patients. About MedicAlert Foundation

MedicAlert Foundation pioneered the first medical identification and emergency medical information service in 1956 to provide people with a simple but effective method for communicating their medical conditions. Since the organization's founding, MedicAlert has provided services and products that help to protect and save lives for its 4 million members. For more than 50 years, the nonprofit has relayed vital medical information on behalf of its members to emergency responders so they receive faster and safer treatment. MedicAlert IDs alert emergency personnel to a member's primary health conditions.
