CAP Deeming Status Renewed
Date:4/8/2009

NORTHFIELD, Ill., April 8 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The College of American Pathologists (CAP), which has been re-approved as a private accreditation organization and deeming authority under the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments of 1988 by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) since 1995, has been notified that it has received approval in all specialties and subspecialties for a six-year period, the longest period available for this award.

Long considered the gold standard in standards setting and evaluation, as well as for its support of quality patient care, the College of American Pathologists is a medical society that serves more than 17,000 physician members and the laboratory community throughout the world.

"CAP has undergone close, continuous scrutiny of all its processes, procedures, accreditation publications and its policies," said CAP President Jared Schwartz, MD, FCAP. "This approval recognizes CAP as an organization that complies with all CLIA requirements in all specialties and subspecialties."

Council on Accreditation Chair, Jay Schamberg, MD, FCAP, explained, "CMS evaluates how we monitor proficiency testing for inspections, how we inspect and our criteria for accreditation. CAP accreditation assures the public that accredited laboratories meet or exceed the applicable requirements proscribed by CMS."

According to CAP Executive Vice President Charles Roussel, "Laboratories accredited by the CAP provide everyone involved with the assurance of a gold standard of care that ensures the highest caliber of patient safety, as many of our standards are more stringent than CLIA regulations. We are very pleased at having maintained our status as a deeming authority and by being recognized as a quality organization."

CAP is the world's largest association composed exclusively of pathologists and is widely recognized as the leader in laboratory quality assurance. The CAP is an advocate for high quality and cost-effective patient care. More information about CAP can be found at www.cap.org.
