C8 Exposure And Contamination
C8, also known as perfluorooctoanoic acid (PFOA), was used for decades at DuPont’s Washington Works plant. In 2005, DuPont reached a settlement in a C8 class action lawsuit which, among other things, required it to establish a scientific panel to explore the health consequences of C8 exposure. The same settlement also preserved the rights of class members living in any of the six affected water districts near the Plant to sue for personal injuries in the event the C8 Science Panel established a probable link between C8 exposure and any illness or disorder. The six water districts affected by the DuPont C8 class action lawsuit included:
In October 2012, the C8 Science Panel reported that it had determined a probable link between exposure to C8-tainted drinking water and six diseases, including kidney cancer, testicular cancer, thyroid disease, inflammatory bowel disease, preeclampsia, and high cholesterol. Court documents indicate that more than two dozen DuPont C8 lawsuits have been filed in the multidistrict litigation underway in Ohio. Among other things, these complaints allege that as early as the 1980s, DuPont had information in its possession that indicated exposure to C8-tainted drinking water could lead to various adverse health consequences in exposed workers. Plaintiffs further allege that DuPont has known for several decades that discharge of C8 into the Ohio River from the Washington Works contaminated water supplies, and that C8 pollution from the facility could be reduced substantially by use of a carbon absorption treatment system.
