Building Olympic Champions Starts With Addressing Childhood Obesity

ORLANDO, Fla., March 8 /PRNewswire/ -- According to the First Lady Michelle Obama's Let's Move initiative, obesity rates among children have tripled in the past 30 years.  GeoMotion Group, a leading fitness and learning company based in Florida is taking an active role by creating and delivering programs which improve children's health while helping them achieve academic success.

Dr. Debby Mitchell, GeoMotion's President and Founder, UCF Associate Professor studied the relationship between rhythmic competency and academic performance in young students.  The results show that youth receiving additional physical activity show improved attributes such as increased brain function and nourishment, higher energy and concentration levels.

"Good health habits are established early in life.  With the Learnercise movement activities, teachers and children use multiple sensory modalities creating neural connections across numerous pathways in the brain," says Dr. Mitchell.  The branching of these connections is one of the first steps in wiring the brain for future learning [NASPE, Appropriate Practices in Movement Programs for Young Children].

GeoMotion is a proud sponsor of the Early Childhood Movement Day at the National Association for Sport and Physical Education, on March 17th at the National American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance in Indianapolis, March 16 – 20, 2010.

Dr. Debby Mitchell and Dr. JoAnne Owens-Nauslar, "Dr. Jo" GeoMotion's Director of Corporate/Community Development will be in Washington D.C. on March 10, for the SGMA's 11th Annual National Health Through Fitness Day.  Sponsors of this event include GeoMotion Group, General Mills, Nike, NFL Players Association, Reebok and PlayCore.

"Every Child deserves a private trainer," says Dr. Jo.  "We are helping build not only the future Olympic champions, but also a generation which is healthier and fit physically and academically.  We believe it is our obligation to lead the change and help create this generation."
